My first major project was a game table. The top of the table is a shallow box that can be opened to allow play on the "inside" surface,

or closed to allow use of the top of the table.

Of course, the idea is to be able to leave a game or puzzle setup while you have dinner or use the table for other purposes.

My table is made of mahogany, and is the first major woodworking project I've ever attempted. (I never even took shop classes in school.) The table is about six feet long, and 32 inches wide. Prior to this work, I've always been the kind of guy who wanted to have the last coat of varnish drying on the same afternoon I start the project. I took my time with this table and I'm proud of the way it came out.

My wife's comments were:

"If I'd known you were capable of doing this kind of work, I'd have asked you to make our dining room table instead of buying it."

I took this as a great compliment. But then she said:

"Who are you, and what have you done with my husband?"
