Are you just starting out playing ASL? Just re-starting after a long absence?
Then this is for you. This is a collection of links and web resources that will
help the new player. Have fun.
1) Scenarios
- Multi Man
Publishing - Some out of print scenarios are available for free download.
Go to
this
page and look for the links to download. (Multi Man Publishing is also
where you go to pre-order new games - and you can see what is currently in
print and in stock.)
- ASL Classic - This is a "must have". It includes ten scenarios that were
originally published for Squad Leader and updated to ASL (including "Guards
Counter Attack" and "Tractor Works" - both infantry only slug fests) and six
"tournament series" scenarios (Including more infantry only recommended
scenarios - "Gavin Take" and others). Something for everyone in this group,
some infantry only, some big classics....
- Streets of Fire - 10 Scenarios designed for Deluxe ASL. If you don't
have the deluxe boards, you can still play these on VASL (see #4 below).
- Action Pack #1 - 8 more scenarios, including "Bloody Harvest" - a
recommended infantry only scenario for beginners.
- Provence Pack - Ten Scenarios created by the French - about actions
involving the French. Some very good scenarios here.
-
Schwerpunkt - Volumes of scenarios - good scenarios - available for sale.
Recommended.
- Heat of
Battle - Another great producer of ASL material.
- Le Franc Tireur - Very high
quality - perhaps a tad expensive in the USA - but still recommended.
- The Bunker
- A newsletter every 4 months - includes a sceanrio or two. Recommended.
2) Play Aids
- Desperation
Morale Website - A collection of Play Aids and comprehensive reviews of
ASL products. Some free scenarios too. A really excellent site.
- Some fabulous
Examples of
Play - by Tom Repetti. You want to see (step by step) how a basic infantry
scenario is played? Go here.
- Don't miss the "Counter Storage" article either.
- Also here - Play aids for Defensive First Fire, Close Combat, Line of
Sight, and Aquisition
- Tom is also very active in creating maps for VASL (see #4 below).
- My own Play Aids
- An on-line index for both ASL and the ASL Starter Kit is available on the
ROAR site. Click on
the link to "ASL Articles".
3) Publications / Newsletters
-
The ASL FAQ - Lots of good information here. What do you need to play ASL?
What is available? What are good scenarios to learn Infanty? Armor? Beach
Landings? It's all here.
- Desperation
Morale's ASL Discussion Group (moderated - i.e. civil). Look for the
button...
-
ASL Forum on GameSquad.com (much more active, but more flame wars)
4) More Links...
- ROAR - A site
that lets you report the games / opponents you play. Even if you don't do
that, it also accumulates statistics on balance, and player recommendations
for scenarios.
- Here's my "Perry
Sez" collection of questions and answers about all sorts of ASL issues and
rules.
- VASL - go here and download
the latest version. Then download the boards and you can play ASL on the
computer - either by emailing the log file, or "live" on the internet. Once
you have the program and boards downloaded, it runs quite nicely even on a
dial up connection. It also lets you see all the maps that you don't have your
hands on yet...
- View From the Trenches.
Bills itself as "Britain's Premier ASL Journal - and with good reason. Lots of
PDFs of the journal available for free download. Tons of interesting and well
written articles.
