ASL Tactics Quiz Time!

Situation #2

You are the German Player and it is the last player turn of the game. All the buildings have a ground level only. You have to break the Russian Infantry to win.

It is the beginning of the German Rally phase. What is your plan?

One again, I'll post the first replies...

1. If I *have* to break them here my odds are not good. I think the first thing is to shoot the MMG, 468, and leader at X4. Thats an 8 add 1. You will get a NMC or better (I think) 58% of the time which will break him 58% of the time. With any luck you will have isolated the end units and forced them to defend on their own. Now for the trickier parts. I would attack X5 next. I would NAM the HS into Z5, Y6 and try to draw fire. Next I would Assault Move into and attempt infantry smoke in Y5. With a lot of luck I could potentially have a 6 add 2 shot. Only gives me roughly a 28% of a NMC or better but I can still have a chance at him in CC with an eye toward killing him (dead is broken in my book 8^). Moving to the last position in X3, I would AM the full squad first into Y3 and try for infantry smoke and pray for the best. I would then NAM the HS into Y2 and X2 and try my luck at placing the DC. If lightining strikes and that is successful, a 30 add 3 gets a NMC some 90% of the time. It would probably require surviving more than one 6 down 2 or better attacks (SFF and possibly FPF). If I get to the point where placement is looking like a real threat the Russian almost has to shoot FPF which risks breaking all on it's own. I would advance fire with anything that survives. Anything that survives and has an opponent next to them I would advance into the hex and pray to the dice gods for some luck in CC. Oh yeah, I would not bet the house on this turn. -- jim

2. Setup offboard Panther company...if NA...
Wind DR... if NE...
Think about deploying AA6...hmmm...
Never can figure out whether a good idea or not...
8 up 1 or 2...may not be able to see X3 anyway...try to deploy...If NE... $%^%$&^%&%^... Plan B
Prep Fire... None of that...spray fire 4 up 1 is an option but NE on it or 8 up 1 and game over.
So, when in doubt, move out... Worried most about 8-1 and firelane... 1-3 w/ ldr. lane but BD 11... cowering could hit the 2 lone squads... i'm moving the Z2 Demo HS NAM Y2...X3 going to need to shoot sometime, 2 to X2...needs to shoot now... if he saves leader and lmg, squad could cower, if he adds leader lmg may cower later... No shot i'll place it 4... If deployed in AA6 HS NAM Z6 Y6 ...(Remaining HS and leader move later as below)
Still looking to get LMG to shoot...If not deployed.. Z4 HS AM Y4...have to get 3 GO MMC in post to advance in and maybe get a lucky AFire shot... Depending on fire status/ residual... Z2 try to smoke Y3 and NAM 4 or NAM 3 into... Z4 attempting the same in Y5... If only a Squad in AA6 going AA5 Z4 then Y4 Y5 as needed to get one decent Afire shot for lucky pin/ break...Leader going same route to Y4...
Reds need to hit X2 to stop Demo from Blowing and the other HS draw first fire, if not they'll have 4 even final fires and I should at least have 3 GO units to advance in for the ambushes and CC Kills..... NOT BLOODY LIKELY!!!

3. Everyone moves. Sitting back with any fire support is a quick recipe for losing. Unfortunately the Germans still are on the short end of the stick and will need some luck to come up with victory. By moving it gives at least 2 opportunities to break or eliminate guys. One in the AFPh and than in CC. Attempt to deploy the squad in aa6. AM the z4 248 into Y4. From there it really depends on how the Russian reacts and who survives what. The z2 468 goes next, AM into Y3. Depending on what happens to him the z4 468 AM into y5 or y4. The z2 248 with a DC goes y2, x2. If the 468 in Y3 is unpinned and in GO he attempts to place the DC, otherwise throw it. Need to maximize sticking around by throwing the DC if no one is in Y3. If deployment is successful in aa6, one 248 moves goes z5, y5 so he can fill in any gaps and the other goes to z6, y6. The 9-1 fills in any remaining gaps. Hoefully there is enough of a force to throw some fire back in the AFPh and if there is anyone left spread the CC's out so that all remeining Russian hexes gets jumped, no matter the odds. Pretty tough though. If I were betting on this give me the Russians.....

4. Almost impossible to come up with one answer. Later moves are dependent on whether or not you get smoke from two/one/none of the 468s.

I keep waffling between deploying the 468 w/MMG to run a 248 into W6 to encircle the 447 or to use the whole stack to fire a 12+2 on the LMG group.

It all depends on the smoke.

5. Prep the 9-1/468/MMG at X5 8(+1), hope for at least a break, maybe even ROF, if ROF the take the 4(+1) shot(s) at X4. Let's assume a break in X5 only. then AM the Z4 248 into Y4, hope for a bunch of shots and some tough dudes. let's assume the X4 447 FF 8(-1) and breaks the 248 leaving 4 resid. Then the Z4 468 AMs into Y4 eating the 4(-1), assumes he lives. The X4 447 SFF 4(-1) also NE, then the 468 in Y4 spends two more MF to attempt smoke into Y3, he's already eaten the 4 resid shot so deson't have to take it again and also the 447 won't FPF(incidentally the german can't afford to try for smoke while in the Z3 bldg in case he rolls a 6). Let's say it works, then the Z2 468 AMs into Y3, and the 8-1 stack holds fire (they're not going anywhere after all and resid during movement while the smoke lasted wouldn't be useful). Now the 248/demo NAM moves into Y3, the 8-1 can't wait anymore and blasts them 12(flat), miraculously, the 248 survives, 6 resid placed (not shooting thru the smoke). The 248 now places the demo, eats the 6(+1) resid, and a 6(flat) SFF(sustained lmg) shot from the 8-1. If he makes it you have a good chance to win by breaking the 8-1/447 with the 30(+3) and then taking out the 447 in x4 with either the 6(+2) adv fire or the 1:1 CC. In any case it's a tough row to hoe for the germans. -Paul Sidhu
