Contributor: Boardgame Corner
Before starting Boardgame Corner in April 2014, Mark and Randy spent 10-plus years waging heroic deeds against aliens, zombies, monsters – Cthulhu too – and even saved the Earth more times than they can count (you’re welcome). But our lives aren’t always an adventure in conquest and countermoves.
I was born and raised in Fort Collins, Colorado, I’ve been married to my terrific (and tolerant) wife Anna since 1989, and I’m the proud father of daughters Shelby and Tessa. I attended the Colorado Institute of Art, from which I have a degree in Occupational Studies in Photography; back in the late 80’s and early 90’s I was the photographer for Star Trek, Lucasfilm, and Back to the Future magazines. I also spent many hours playing and reviewing all of the LucasArts games. Now, by day, I’m a web developer and technical services manager for Wire Stone LLC. By night, I’m playing and reviewing board games with Randy.
The game bug bit me early. I’ve owned just about every video gaming console you can name, beginning with Atari Pong. I dived into D&D in 1979 when I was 11, and discovered Awful Green Things from Outer Space, both ignited my love for tabletop gaming. After many, many hours at the table and in front of the screen, I’m happy to say it’s been a big part of my life—which leads me back to Boardgame Corner. Over many Friday nights dating back to 2004, Randy and I have been talking, debating, and dissecting our favorite games (as well as the occasional stinker). We took our confab public as Boardgame Corner on April 26, 2014, which also leads me to this: a big thank you to the Dice Tower for giving us our little corner of the tower.
I grew up in Kansas and received degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Kansas State University (though I was somewhat surprised that countless expeditions into the steam tunnels didn’t count toward a minor in Urban Spelunking). After some consulting jobs in Washington D.C. and Dallas, I now work as a technical architect designing business applications and IT infrastructure in a large technology company. I am blessed to be able to enjoy life in Colorado with a loving wife, two devoted Yorkshire Terriers and a variety of high quality and highly entertaining friends.
Video gaming has been one of my favorite pastimes since the very first home game console (the Magnavox Odyssey). (Yes, I’m that old. Or “that retro-cool”, you decide.) However, tabletop gaming is usually my preference since it provides an opportunity to spend time with friends and foster those relationships. The games that I find most engaging are those that involve building/planning (though not so much to prevent casual conversation) and allow me to compete with myself more than with others. Learning new games is always fun, but I like to play more established games so that everyone is past the learning curve and can relax rather than trying to figure out how all the widgets work together. My favorite games in our casual gaming group are Tikal, Alhambra, China, 7 Wonders (and all expansions) and Ticket to Ride (all the maps and even a home-grown expansion). When the more hardcore gamers get together, I enjoy Hyperborea, Legendary Encounters, Mansions of Madness and Eldritch Horror.
It’s an honor to be part of the Dice Tower network. Mark and I hope that viewers find our Boardgame Corner segments to be entertaining as well as helpful in choosing great games for them and their friends. Whether at a convention or just in the comment section, we hope to see you all at the table soon!
